DENTAL CARE PROFESSIONALS (DCP)

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the regulatory body in the UK for Dentists and Dental care professionals working in the UK. Dental care professionals are qualified to practice certain aspects of dental care. Overseas qualified dentists can apply to be a DCP and gain competencies, skills & knowledge whilst they prepare of overseas registration exam (ORE) or Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS). The term dental care professionals cover a number of titles that are eligible to register with General Dental Council (GDC), UK. Some of the titles dental care professionals use include:

  1. Dental therapist– Dental therapists are registered dental professionals who carry out certain items of dental treatment direct to patients or under prescription from a dentist.
  2. Dental hygienist– Dental hygienists are registered dental professionals who help patients maintain their oral health by preventing and treating periodontal disease and promoting good oral health practice. They carry out treatment direct to patients or under prescription from a dentist.
  3. Orthodontic therapist– is a registered dental professional who carry out certain parts of orthodontic treatment under prescription from a dentist.
  4. Dental technician – Dental technicians are registered dental professionals who make dental devices to a prescription from a dentist or clinical dental technician. They also repair dentures direct to members of the public.
  5. Clinical dental technician– Clinical dental technicians are registeredn dental professionals who provide completedentures direct to patients and other dentaldevices on prescription from a dentist. Theyare also qualified dental technicians.
  6. Dental nurse– is a registered dental professional who provide clinical and other support to registrants and patients.
